Do Essential Oils For Sleep Work In Treating Insomnia?

From struggling to fall asleep to the inability to stay sleeping for a healthy duration, insomnia is a problem that manifests itself in various ways. Fortunately, there are various aromatherapy treatments which are more effective to conventional medication, most of which carries side effects of some sort. Such include essential oils for sleep which are highly effective in promoting relaxation before one goes to bed, thus enabling them overcome insomnia.

Lavender's relaxing properties are well-known as a result of various studies and tests that have delved deeper into its ability to address sleep problems. A number of esters and alcohols that have inherent therapeutic capabilities make up this substance. It's recommended that one uses pure, unadulterated lavender as it is more potent and effective than almost all other varieties.

A study concluded that when used in a foot bath, lavender enhances blood circulation and triggers processes in the autonomic nervous system that happen when during relaxation. Diluting lavender with a carrier oil and applying before going to bed may also be effective. Another technique would be to place several drops on a pillowcase before you go to sleep. Lavender towels can also be used to massage the temples and the back of the neck when one is stressed.

Roman Chamomile is another essential oil that has therapeutic properties. It has a sweet, comforting herby scent that complement its relaxing and sedative attributes, thus making it a popular sleep remedy for children. Researchers also claim that it has the ability to reduce anxiety, hence minimizing hysteria and nightmares.

The exact manner in which Roman chamomile brings about these effects is not fully understood, although they seem to be psychological in nature. You can either diffuse it or rub a few drops on your temple prior to going to bed. It can also be used for meditation and for assisting people express their honest feelings, in which case it is applied over the throat area. Due to its mild irritating properties, you may want to dilute it before use.

Although bergamot oil isn't widely recognized, it works effectively in reducing stress and anxiety for people with mild depression. One could choose between applying it topically, diffusing it, using as a deodorant or incorporating it into their food or water. Because bergamot is sensitive to direct sunlight, it shouldn't be applied on skin if one is going outdoors in less than 24 hours after application.

Because essential oils aren't tightly regulated, one needs to be careful when shopping. You should only go for pure, unadulterated products that carry the botanical name and region of origin. Beware of fragrances and perfumes; synthetic oils don't possess the same therapeutic effects as the natural ones. It would also help to experiment with different methods of application to know which works best for you. People with sensitive skin should dilute the products using carrier oils to avoid irritation and infection.

Although aromatherapy works well in treating insomnia, it wouldn't necessarily help if the problems are caused by other health conditions. It would thus be advisable to consult a doctor to eliminate this possibility, especially if some treatments don't work. You should also use the product in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
