The period immediately after giving birth is often filled with a wide range of emotions, some of which can be very depressing. New mothers report feeling sadness, fear, and joy all in the same day. Most women go through these emotions successfully and are able to emerge from the postpartum period healthy and better. Some get help while others do it on their own. Some new mothers have a hard time going through the period after birth because of the emotions they experience. Some develop and condition referred to as postpartum depression, often shortened as PPD. PPD is a condition that occurs when a new mother experiences feelings of sadness that are so severe that they start interfering with their everyday life.

After giving birth, it may take a few weeks for symptoms of PPD to start showing. In most cases, the condition develops fast, but in some, it takes up to six months for the condition to fully develop. One should seek immediate medication when the condition is fully developed as it can be very serious. There are many symptoms for this condition. Some of the symptoms are mood swings, trouble bonding with the baby, and difficulty in thinking and making decisions.

In the United States, statistics indicate that out of every seven women, one woman develops PPD. One needs to visit a doctor if they feel like they are depressed in order for a diagnosis to be made. The doctor will require the patient to explain how they feel so that they can evaluate the symptoms and develop a treatment plan. The plan mostly involves psychotherapy and antidepressants.

PPD can be avoided through various ways. For instance, a postpartum doula can be hired to help the new mother through the period and give them company. The work of these specialists is to look after new mothers and keep them company by talking and listening to them. Mothers also get helped by doulas to bond with their babies. Symptoms of PPD can easily be noticed by doulas. Thereafter, they will provide advice regarding seeing a doctor for a diagnosis to be provided.

The work of doulas is to help mothers with their daily chores so that they can rest. The leading cause of PPD in mothers is lack of rest. They are always busy either taking care of their babies or working on laundry and cooking. As such, mothers are exposed to a lot of stress which may trigger depression. Doulas are there to prevent such scenarios.

Doulas are usually specially trained to be able to provide the services that they do. One can get referrals for doulas from obstetricians, pediatricians, midwives, and family doctors. Other sources of referrals include the internet, local family services agency, breastfeeding support groups, women centers, local hospitals, and churches among others.

Even with a doula present, new mothers are also advised to take some part towards achieving full recovery. One of the ways of avoiding PPD is by exercising. One does not have to engage in heavy exercises because that may cause a problem in itself. Light exercises such as walking with a baby in a stroller and going for short walks can help a lot. Eating a balanced diet is also very important.
