A Beginner's Guide To Choosing Unique Yoga Mats

By Elaine Guthrie

If you are interested in purchasing a mat to practice yoga on, you may have noticed that there are many different models available. Unique yoga mats can be found in different sizes, thicknesses and materials. Here is what you need to consider before you begin your search.

If you think that a mat is just a fashion accessory you are incorrect. A good model can increase your safety by eliminating or reducing the chance that you will slip or fall. It can provide a barrier between a dirty floor and your body. If you sweat during practice, this is important. It can pad you as well which is nice when you are meditating or relaxing at the end of a practice session.

These items are available in many different materials, sizes and styles. You may find that you will want to try several different styles or materials before you find the one that suits you best. This is where it can be helpful to try certain styles out in a studio setting as you will get a feel for how it actually feels when you practice.

Height can pose a problem when you are shopping for a mat. Long limbs can mean that feet and hands can be quite far apart during some positions. If you hate the idea of adjusting feet and hands in some poses, look for extra length and you will be able to avoid this issue. Shorter practitioners may want to look for a smaller sized mat or cut a larger one down if they feel that it is too large.

If you have joint issues or mobility issues you may want to look for one that is extra thick. This can provide an extra layer of comfort and padding when you are trying to support yourself on your arms or in some of the more involved poses. Keep in mind that a thicker mat may cause you to lose a sense of connection with the floor that some people want when they practice.

If you have allergies to plastic or latex, the common sticky mat may not be a good choice for you. If so, you may want to look at models that are made from more natural fiber such as wool or cotton. If you are considering one of these items, check to make sure it will still provide you with any traction that you may need so that you do not slide out of your poses.

Accessories can be helpful and can even help extend the life of your yoga mat. For example, the right cleaner can keep the material from breaking down due to sweat or bacteria. A case can protect it when you are not practicing and can make it easier and more convenient to travel from home to practice and to all points in between.

Shopping online is often a good idea for a few reasons. The first is that you may be able to see a wider selection of options than any one store might be able to provide you with. Another plus is that the cost is often more reasonable than at a store or specialty boutique. Just remember to factor in shipping costs or exchange rates before making your purchase.
